Christingle Service

  • Rochester Cathedral Chapter Office Rochester United Kingdom (map)

Our family friendly Christingle Service takes place on Saturday 14th December at 12:30pm.

Join in with traditional carols as the nights grow darker.  During the service every child receives the gift of a Christingle, a little lighted wax candle tied round with a red ribbon.  As the children receive these gifts, the lights are dimmed illuminating the Cathedral with candle light.

Each element of a Christingle helps tell the Christian story and has a special meaning.

  • The orange represents the world

  • The red ribbon (or tape) symbolises the love and blood of Christ

  • The sweets and dried fruit represents all of God’s creations

  • The lit candle represents Jesus’s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness.

This is a perfect service to bring children and families along to the Cathedral as part of your Christmas season. All services are free and open to all to attend.
