Challenge 10–A Treasure Trove of Art
Rochester Cathedral is a treasure trove of art. Wherever you look you will see beautiful images and decoration. Next time you visit see how many different forms of art you can find. Stone, wood, fabric, plaster, paint – you will find artwork created from various materials and in many different places - floors, walls windows and even ceilings! Bring a sketch book or camera to record what you find.
If you look very carefully at the ceiling in the crypt you will see the remains of amazing medieval paintings. Can you imagine how difficult and tiring it would be to create images on a ceiling! Why not try this yourself. Use masking tape to attach a piece of paper to the underside of a hard chair, bench or table. Lie on your back and try to draw a picture or pattern on the paper (it might be best to use a pencil to do this). Make sure that you only draw on the paper!
